Bontrager Introduces a More Affordable WaveCel Mountain Bike Helmet 1

At half the price of the Blaze WaveCel MTB helmet, the new Rally looks like a good bang for your buck to protect your head.

In early 2019, Bontrager released a new range of cycling helmets created with something called WaveCel technology. Fast forward a year and they're back with value-focused versions of the full range. We've had a short amount of time in the new Rally helmet and can confirm that it has all the essential features and a very comfortable fit in a clean package.

First Impressions

The size Large Rally WaveCel helmet that Bontrager sent us fits very comfortably and sizing is comparable to other major brands. There are no pressure points, and the BOA system keeps the helmet secure. Air flow is nice, cool and not interrupted. We're stoked on the three-position visor. It has a "low" setting that would look a little goofy for full-time use, but could really come in handy when riding into the sun as it starts to rise or set. To the single-finger touch, the WaveCel ridges feel sharp, but we pressed it down onto our skin pretty hard and did not feel any discomfort. We'll spend some time in the Rally and will report back with some on-trail experiences.

What is WaveCel?

According to Bontrager, "WaveCel is a collapsible cellular material that lines the inside of your helmet. It’s designed to lessen the motion associated with brain injury through a three-step change in material structure."

"It was developed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Steve Madey and biomechanical engineer Dr. Michael Bottlang, who have collaborated for the past 25 years and pioneered advances in fracture care, thoracic and pelvic trauma, and head injury prevention."
